PCOS & Hormonal Hair

Honest expectations, real long-term relief.

Major density reduction

Most PCOS clients see 60–80% reduction in hair density after 8–12 sessions — significantly less daily plucking, threading, shaving.

Finer, lighter regrowth

Hair that does grow back is finer, lighter, and slower-growing. Much easier to manage between maintenance sessions.

Built-in maintenance plan

Because PCOS hormones reactivate dormant follicles, we plan maintenance sessions every 6–10 weeks after the initial package — keeps results consistent.

Safe for sensitive skin

PCOS often comes with acne or melasma. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is safe for sensitive, acne-prone, and melanin-rich skin (Fitzpatrick I–VI).

A studio that understands PCOS hair.

  • We've worked with hundreds of PCOS clients — we know your hair behaves differently and we plan for it. No "6 sessions and you're done" lies.

  • Boutique, private setting — one client at a time. Facial laser for PCOS can feel vulnerable; we make it calm and discreet.

  • Transparent timeline: initial package of 8–12 sessions, then maintenance every 6–10 weeks. We tell you upfront, no surprises.

  • Coordinated with your medical care — if you're on hormone therapy, spironolactone, or birth control, we adjust the schedule accordingly.

Book a free consultation at our Midtown studio — we'll discuss your specific hair patterns, medical history, and build a realistic long-term plan that fits your life and budget.

FAQ

PCOS-specific questions.

Yes — but with realistic expectations. Laser permanently destroys the follicles it treats, but PCOS hormones (elevated androgens) keep stimulating dormant follicles your body already has. So you'll see major reduction (60–80% density) but maintenance every 6–10 weeks keeps results consistent. Without laser, most PCOS clients are managing hair daily; with laser, it becomes a quick maintenance session every couple of months.
PCOS typically requires more sessions than a non-hormonal client: 8–12 sessions every 4–6 weeks for the initial package, then maintenance every 6–10 weeks ongoing. By comparison, a non-hormonal client may need only 6–8 sessions and minimal maintenance. We're upfront about this — anyone who promises "PCOS done in 6 sessions" isn't being honest with you.
Not required, but it helps. Many PCOS clients combine laser with spironolactone, metformin, birth control, or other hormone-modulating treatments prescribed by their endocrinologist or gynecologist. Treating the root cause (androgen excess) makes laser results more durable. We work alongside your medical team, not in place of them.
Paradoxical hypertrichosis — laser stimulating new hair growth instead of reducing it — is a real but rare side effect (~0.5–2% of cases), most often reported on the face/neck of women with hormonal conditions, especially PCOS. We minimize the risk by: (1) using correct settings for hormonal hair, (2) treating the surrounding "buffer zone" so no fine vellus hair gets stimulated, (3) checking in at every session. If you notice this happening, we adjust protocol immediately. Honest disclosure — it's something we discuss with every PCOS client.
Acne — yes, with care. We avoid actively inflamed pustules but can treat around them. Many PCOS clients see acne improvement on laser-treated zones (less ingrowns, less plucking, less inflammation). Melasma — we need to be more cautious. We do a thorough consultation and use conservative settings; sometimes we recommend treating melasma first (peels) before starting laser. Always honest discussion at consult.
No laser during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — not because it's unsafe, but because pregnancy hormones trigger massive hair changes that make results unpredictable. Wait until 3 months after stopping breastfeeding, then resume. If you're trying to conceive, we'll plan around your cycle.
The chin and upper lip are sensitive, but the Candela has built-in cooling spray that fires before each pulse — most clients find it very tolerable, especially compared to threading or waxing. Sessions are very short (3–10 minutes for facial zones), so even if uncomfortable, it's over quickly.
Yes. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus uses dual wavelengths — including Nd:YAG, the safest and most effective wavelength for Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin. PCOS often occurs alongside diverse skin tones, and we're equipped for all of them. First visit always includes a free test patch.
