It's the first question almost every new client asks: how many laser hair removal sessions will I actually need? You've seen the marketing promising "permanent results in 6 treatments" and you'd like the truth — not a sales pitch.

Honest answer: it depends on the area, your hormones, and your hair-skin combination. Most people land somewhere between 6 and 10 sessions for full results, with occasional touch-ups after that. Here's the real breakdown, by zone, with no spin.

Laser doesn't work on a calendar — it works on a hair cycle. That's why "fewer sessions" promises are usually fewer than your skin actually needs.

Why do I need so many sessions in the first place?

Your hair doesn't grow all at once. At any given moment, only a portion of follicles in an area are in the active growth phase — and that's the only phase the laser can effectively target. The rest are resting or shedding, and a laser pulse simply can't "see" them yet.

So a single session treats only the follicles that happen to be active that day. Wait 4–6 weeks, a new batch enters the active phase, and we treat those. Repeat. That cycle is exactly why one or two sessions, no matter how powerful the device, will never finish the job.

At Luma we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus — a dual-wavelength medical-grade laser (Alexandrite 755 nm + Nd:YAG 1064 nm) that's safe for all skin tones, from very fair to deeply melanin-rich. The Nd:YAG wavelength in particular makes it possible to treat dark skin safely, which older single-wavelength systems can't do.

How many sessions do you need, by area?

These are honest ranges based on what we typically see in the studio. Your number may sit at the lower or higher end depending on your hair density, hormones, and consistency between sessions.

Quick reference — sessions per area

  • Underarms: 4–6 sessions. One of the fastest, most satisfying areas.
  • Bikini / Brazilian: 6–8 sessions. Dense, coarse hair responds well, but it takes a full series.
  • Lower legs: 6–8 sessions. A larger area, but the contrast between hair and skin usually works in your favour.
  • Full legs: 6–9 sessions. Thigh hair is often finer and takes a little longer.
  • Arms: 6–8 sessions.
  • Back / chest: 6–10 sessions. Often hormone-driven, especially for men.
  • Face (upper lip, chin, sideburns): 6–10+ sessions. The most hormone-sensitive area on the body.

If you want to map out a personalised plan, our overview of all laser areas walks through every zone we treat. For the two most-asked-about spots: underarms and Brazilian.

Why are hormonal areas different?

The face, chin, upper lip, neck, lower belly and nipples are all hormone-sensitive follicles. That means their behaviour is influenced by things like PCOS, thyroid shifts, pregnancy and post-pregnancy changes, perimenopause, and certain medications.

The laser can absolutely reduce hair in these areas — most clients see dramatic, life-changing results — but because your hormones keep gently "switching on" new follicles, hormonal zones often need:

This isn't laser "not working." It's biology. And maintenance for a hormonal area looks like one quick session a year — not the constant shaving, waxing, or plucking you were doing before.

Why "permanent" is the wrong word

The FDA-approved language for laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. And there's a reason for that.

What most clients see after a full series:

Long-term reduction means waking up and not thinking about hair anymore. That's the realistic, beautiful outcome — not a sci-fi promise.

What changes from session to session?

Every appointment, your hair should be a little finer, a little slower, and a little sparser. That's how we know the laser is doing its job.

As your hair changes, so does the treatment. Your provider will adjust the fluence (energy level), pulse duration, and sometimes the wavelength to match what your follicles need that day. A first session and a fifth session almost never use the same settings — that's a feature, not a flaw.

You'll often notice:

Why spacing matters: 4–6 weeks apart

Sessions are spaced roughly 4–6 weeks apart for most body areas, and sometimes 3–4 weeks for the face. That window matches the natural hair cycle in each zone — long enough for a fresh batch of follicles to enter the active growth phase, short enough that you stay on the laser's rhythm.

Coming in too early wastes a session. Coming in too late (skipping months between treatments) doesn't ruin your progress, but it does stretch out your timeline. The single biggest predictor of how quickly you finish a series is simply showing up consistently.

Will I need touch-ups forever?

For non-hormonal areas — underarms, legs, bikini line, arms — most clients finish their series and don't think about hair for years. A small percentage of follicles may reactivate over time and benefit from a quick annual touch-up, but many people simply don't need one.

For hormonal areas, occasional maintenance (one or two sessions a year) is the realistic, honest plan. It's not a failure of the treatment — it's just how those follicles behave throughout your life.

A note on skin tone

One of the most important things to know: laser hair removal is safe for all skin tones when the right device is used. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus combines two wavelengths so we can treat the full spectrum of skin types — including deeply melanin-rich skin that older lasers couldn't safely treat. Your provider adjusts settings to your skin type at every single session.

If you've been told elsewhere that laser "isn't for you" because of your skin tone, that was about the device, not about you.

The honest takeaway

Plan for a real series — usually 6 to 10 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart — and you'll get the result you actually came for: long-term reduction, finer regrowth, and a routine that no longer revolves around hair removal. Expect the timeline to be slightly different from your friend's. Expect hormonal areas to need a little more patience. And expect your provider to adjust settings every visit as your hair changes.
